A Look Back at 2021

In 2021, we were able to resume our travel adventures. The flexiblity of being able to work remotely made it possible to get the most out of our hotel points, timeshare options, credit card rewards, and travel deals to spend twenty-eight nights exploring Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana.

Here is the photo gallery.

The highlight of the year was our road trip around Montana and Wyoming in the Fall as an early celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary, focusing on Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Teton National Park.

It was our first time at Glacier National Park and, although we planned the trip to avoid the tourist rush, we still had to get a little creative to mitigate the crowds. We also enjoyed visiting Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, and Whitefish, and getting a better feel for the state in general. Cary ate huckleberry ice cream almost every day while in Montana (sometimes twice a day) and he also stocked up on jerky.

Back in Wyoming we took in the scenery at Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, both extremely congested for shoulder season, but again we were mostly successful in avoiding the crowds and traffic.

We splurged for a stay in a Wedge Cabin at the Fireside Resort in Wilson, just outside of Jackson, WY.

The scenery throughout the trip was magnificent and the wildlife abundant. Our wildlife sightings included bison, elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, moose (including a moose cow and her calf in a clearing below a moose habitat overlook), and a very "socially distant" black bear.

Getaways to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado included ski resorts in the winter and fall so Cary could skiboard, and a stay in Steamboat Springs to check out some of our favorite (easy access) wildflower landscapes in July.

In addition, we took to the wide-open roads of Wyoming closer to home to explore our new state. Highlights include visits to the Snowy Range Mountains, Vedauwoo, and Terry Bison Ranch.

... and see lots of other animals — like this camel. It's quite an odd sight to see the camels from the freeway in Wyoming.

Blizzard 2021... and getting caught in a hailstorm in May with 1-2 inch hail while driving on the freeway. We are very grateful for car windshields and insurance.

We survived the Wyoming wind, the extreme low winter wind chills, a blizzard in March (glad this wasn't our car),

Cheyenne Frontier Days, "The World's Largest Outdoor Rodeo and Western Celebration!", brought over 267,000 attendees (including Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani) to our tiny little city to partake of the rodeo and outdoor concerts in July. It also brought the Air Force Thunderbirds to town. We parked in a nearby neighborhood next to the Warren Air Force base for a great view without the hassle of waking up early and getting bussed to the base. The 3-mile drive home was the only traffic we've ever experienced in Cheyenne - that even includes driving home after the downtown Fourth of July and New Year's Eve firework shows. Our tiny roundabouts couldn't handle all the cars. We have found Wyomingites to be kind, patient, and willing to lend a hand to strangers, so it was not surprising that nobody got bent out of shape by the delays.

Autumn brought amazing color to the towns up and down the Front Range; with deep yellows, oranges, and reds lasting weeks on end, making all our drives so much more enjoyable. It was one of the best and most widespread foliage displays we’ve had in a while.

Winter has arrived in Wyoming and Northern Colorado and Cary is very happy. He loves snow and is excited for our upcoming trips to Steamboat Springs and Big Sky in 2022. We had a quintessential Christmas in Cheyenne this year, with light displays and a five-inch blanketing of snow — a real White Christmas. Even better, we had blue skies in the afternoon and all the major roads were plowed, so we took a scenic snowy drive to Vedauwoo, where it was still snowing.

Looking forward to more adventures in 2022. May you have a blessed year!
